This is mostly for my own benefit so that I can quickly find it again, but a while back my esteemed (former at the time, now current) coworker cooked up this little bit of git magic on his twitter, in .gitconfig:

[alias]
find = !sh -c 'git ls-files |grep --color=always -i "$@" |less -FRSX'

which then lets you do things like:

git find SomeTest.java

without having to remember all the src/java/test/org/foo/project/bar/baz/ junk. Most handy.

If you don't have plans this Sunday night, come out to the Burren in Davis Square (Somerville) to hear some live music. At 8pm, John Craigie will be performing in the back room. He is a friend of someone I know. I'd like to see a good crowd.

You can hear some of his music on his myspace page. He is a very good acoustic/ folk singer and songwriter.

Mood: sick

Saturday we went to the ren fest with a vaguely unhappy baby. I was so shopped out from Europe, plus a little tired and loopy from the heart thing that I wasn't great company either, but we had fun. An elephant tried to steal our mead bottle and we ate lots of tasty bad-for-us things. Afterward there was a chaotic birthday dinner for a friend that turned out OK in the end.

Sunday J was sick, so we watched Dexter all day while I took care of him. Yesterday and today I've been sick with fever and golfballs in my throat. Unfortunately, I have to take today without pay because I'm completely out of time off. Blah. At least tomorrow is a holiday in case I'm still sick. Maybe I'll ask my boss if I can work tomorrow to make it up (if I'm feeling up to it). Never mind - miscalculated. Today is the last "vacation" day. Then I'm all used up. I'll earn another day by Christmas Eve and then I get a lump 5 days of sick time for 2010 on 1/1. In the meantime, if I could get my mouth to quit feeling like something died in it, I'd be happier.

I remember there being a few people in the community who do cleaning for some extra cash.
Before the end of the year we'll be completely cleaning out the condo to get rid of the pet hair.

We do have a washer dryer in our unit, and we need an extra set of hands.
Anyone interested in earning a little extra money?

It happened so fast that he barely heard the massive snorf or felt the violent whoosh of air. But when he looked down, Paul realized that his entire forearm had been sucked up her trunk, and the look in her eyes said, “I don’t have to give it back, you know.” It was the first and last time Paul would play “I got your nose!” with Ellafante.

Oh honey, you best let go of that peanut if you want to keep your dignity.

That’s a risky little game, Christoph G.

Subject:Food For Thought – Tuesday, November 10th
Security:Public

Here’s some food for thought for today…

  • The “speakeasy” has jumped the shark – making an appearance in some teen-oriented television show. Will that affect the crowds at Toronto’s newly opened Roosevelt Room? Given the fridge full of Red Bull behind the bar, I’d say they’re well prepared for their new target demographic.
  • Is it acceptable to have a drink at lunchtime with colleagues, or is it another one of those things we don’t do anymore?
  • More than a little spilt milk – there’s a push to serve chocolate milk in US schools, purportedly because it’s more nutritious than juice or soda. But it’s also sweetened. And oh yeah… our bodies don’t actually need milk, so wouldn’t it make more sense for the kids to get those nutrients from better sources?
  • We tend to think of the US as the land of fast food, but it turns out there are many fast food items from US chains not available in that country. I’m disappointed to see the McLobster roll (served in the Maritime provinces) didn’t make the cut.
  • Neighbours of director Guy Ritchie’s London pub The Punch Bowl are unimpressed by the constant traffic, even if the customers are royals and celebrities.
  • Marion Nestle comes onside in support of a vegetarian diet. As all of us pseudo-veggies knew all along, it’s perfectly safe and probably healthier than eating meat.
  • Women feed the world – too bad that, in many countries, they’re still not allowed to own the land they farm.

There's something on my head that i'm not sure i can articulate right now:

- about the individual's process through making, the approach to perfection and the preciousness and appreciation of errors, and the information about the maker contained in them;

- also segueing through knowing an author through their work when you also know the author, and treading that delicate, public=private space;

- also how that space seems to evoke the greatest compassion and understanding in me, how standing inside another person's silence-within allows one to draw hundreds of small connections between their disparate ideas that might otherwise take years to come together;

- and also the false intimacy and stoppered love this exchange-without-exchange creates.

Gah. Maybe i'll be able to string it together in a cohesive set of paragraphs when i'm not feeling like i've just stolen one of Death's cookies.

Subject:Roommate is not paying their rent!!!
Security:Public

I live in a house with two other roommates. The three of us were on a lease from Dec '07 through Dec '08, and have simply been tenants-at-will since then. We each pay our share of rent individully to the landlord, but my understanding is that we are responsible together for insuring that rent for the apartment is paid in full.

We received a note on the door yesterday from our landlord saying that he would like a call concerning ROOMMATE #3's rent. My other roommate called him back and learned that ROOMMATE #3 was late on this months rent, AND had not paid last months rent either. ROOMMATE #3 has also been eating our food when we are not around, and has not been paying utilities on time.

The kicker here is that ROOMMATE #3 is the ONLY member of the household with a job, and he makes good money. (Corporate Web Developer) :\

Our landlord would love to see this person go, but mainly, he just wants his money. That means that it becomes the responsibility of the other roommate and myself (the unemployed ones) to cover this gap, which is obviously difficult if not impossible for us to do.

I would like to know if anyone has been through a deadbeat roommate situation like this before, and has any words of wisdom on the legal ramifications involved. We know that we can't just kick the deadbeat out, and we don't want to loose this apartment either! (We like it here, and we have a pretty good report with the landlord since we stopped throwing late night parties a year ago!) We would love to get rid of this deadbeat!

Any helpful advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thank!
